Separating Fear from Wisdom

I was talking with a friend today about the fear that paralyzes me in life.  A couple years ago I was almost arrested for something I didn't know I had done.  The charges were dropped because they turned out to be bogus, but the fear from that situation, sitting in a room all alone thinking I would be in jail when my husband left for 8 months of basic and advanced training, has crippled me since.  That day, I lost my confidence and have yet to find it again.  I am constantly gripped by fear, a fear of doing things wrong, of messing up, of making others angry at me, of failing.  I was discussing this with a friend of mine today and this is what he said when I expressed that I felt stupid all the time.

"Fear is an emotional response. Wisdom is the learned ability to recognize and control fear."
- Tyler Tidwell

I feel as if that amazing, outward, loving, confident, intelligent woman I once was has been stolen.  All of a sudden, everything I do is wrong.  I'm not smart anymore.  I don't know how to do math; I don't know simple every day conversions; I know nothing about history or politics.  I didn't forget all those things, they must still be in my mind somewhere, but the fear has pushed them away.  I feel like a scared, helpless child... and folks, as a child I never felt that way.  I was always brimming with confidence, even to a fault.  I was one of those kids that knew everything, and if I didn't, you can bet I would find out and report back to you with an air of confidence that would make you question if you really knew the answer to begin with.

Where did that person go?  Is she still in me somewhere?  I struggle with this daily.  I think I need to find the answer to this question to know for sure:  If I am in fact not stupid but have become more wise, then how do I separate this fear of failure from my wisdom?  How do I know when the fear ends and the wisdom to keep quiet begins?

I really don't know, but I found some quotes to help.  I hope if you are living in fear that they will help you too.

Friday Fun

It's time for Friday Fun!  That means it's time for Friday Party Hop! I hope you'll join me this week for some blog, twitter, and facebook hopping fun!

Hot 100 Update Week 5

Here are my goals for a quick reminder:
  • Lose 15 lbs
  • List 15 items in my new Etsy shop
  • Completely clean and decorate the Living room, Kitchen, Craft room and Nursery
How did I do last week?
  • I lost 8lbs. That is a total loss of 6.8lbs in the last 5 weeks. - Yes, 8lbs.  I had a stomach virus.  I am slowly gaining that back which is okay because 8lbs in one week, even at my weight, is not healthy.
  • Still on track.  5/15 items listed, 1 sold, custom order in the works.  I also sold something on Ebay that I've been trying to sell for a while.  Old engagement ring/wedding sold!  It was hard to see it go, but it was healing I guess... I don't know lol - Check
  • At a stand still because LB and I both had stomach viruses last week.  We are better now and I can get started again.  - In Progress
How did you do with your goals this week?

Time to Celebrate!

I figured I ought to follow my own advice.  I posted the advice of several weight loss successes and one of the suggestions was to celebrate every victory.  I have been focusing so much on the weight I've gained back after my gallbladder surgery that I completely ignored how far I've come.  In fact, I have 9 celebrations I should have partied through so far!  Sooo without further ado... some well earned back patting!

Yay for me!
And Yay for my supportive husband!
And Yay for my supportive bloggy friends!

Let's Celebrate!!!
{Gifts can be left in the form of comments.  I LOVE comments! teehee}

But wait... there's MORE.... read on!

Will You Be My Sounding Board?

I've been throwing around some thoughts lately and I am having the hardest time sorting them out.  Would you mind reading along and giving me your honest opinion?  You've been so helpful and supportive already; I was hoping I could ask for your assistance once more.

Here's what I've been thinking {in bullet form since it's all pretty jumbled in my mind}:
  • I need to do something more with my life.
  • I should be earning money {even though we don't need it}.
  • I shouldn't take away jobs from someone who really needs that money.
  • What I earn would be less than LB's daycare costs, so I should work at home.
  • What can I do to earn money at home?
  • I can craft for my etsy shop but it's more of a "comes and goes" need to create with my hands.
  • I can work on my novels but that will take years before anything comes of it.
  • I could open my house as a daycare but I haven't had any takers yet.
  • Why is money so important to me when we have enough to live on?  I don't want it to be that important.  I want happiness and fulfillment to be more important.

Feeling Comfortable Naked

As you all have read by now, it is Eat Chocolate Naked week over at Kimberly's Blog, The Art of Eating Chocolate Naked.  She is talking about loving our bodies just the way it is this week.

My body may not be the most healthy it can be right now; I may have 60lbs left to loose; but I can still love the body I am in, today.  I can get out of bed, walk to the nursery {at 3 in the morning}, lift my son and cuddle him back to sleep, then groggily walk back to bed and fall asleep.  I can snuggle up to my husband and be completely responsive if he wants to show me outwardly how much he loves me.  I can jump around the yard and chase after our very energetic puppy in the freezing snow.  I can curl up on the couch and play mind games or read a book.  I can pop some cookies in the oven and smell the sweet aroma filling the house.  These are all blessings I can count each and every day I am alive.  And as I get more and more healthy, I can add to the list of amazing things my body can do for me.  What can your body do for you that you just love to do?

Yesterday Kimberly challenged us to spend 10 minutes, just 10 minutes, completely naked.  She said we could do anything we wanted... I know it takes me at least 10 minutes to do the dishes.  Did you take the challenge?  If not, I am imploring you to do it today.

I do want to share something personal with you all about me being naked.  I am NOT comfortable with it.  Not really because I don't like how I look, although that plays a part in it.  No, I don't like it because I was raised to always be dressed properly.  My hubby on the other hand strips down to nothing and slaps on his robe {sometimes} when he gets home.  The uniform isn't too comfy and he's very comfortable in his birthday suit.  Before I met my husband, I couldn't even sleep naked.  I had gotten so used to having to wear a bra at all times, and having grown up in such a strict house, that after my breast reduction surgery I just continued wearing shirts to bed. Because I was raised in a home without any hugging or kissing, I just about lost it when DH was holding the baby without any undies on for the first time.  I knew bare skin to skin was a good thing for baby, but somehow I had rationalized that you should only bare enough skin for the baby to lay on.  Silly right?  I am proud to say I have gotten over that hang up and now feel that my naked body is a beautiful thing.  Of course, I can't be going around naked once our son gets older... so I'd better do it now!

So, do you have 10 minutes today to be naked?  I'm sure you can find them.  If you haven't already, you should sign up for Kimberly's e-mails.  She sends you her awesome Body Affirmation package.  Doing these affirmations everyday will help you be more comfortable in your skin.  They have done wonders for my confidence.  What are you waiting for?

Stylish and Versatile

Lise at The Baby Bottom Line thinks I am Stylish and Versatile!  Thank you so much Lise!  I am honored.
I also received the Versatile blog award from Jessica at Punk Rock Momma!

I truly am honored and humbled by the response this page has gotten.  I figured it would turn some heads with the nearly nude update photos.  I also guessed that participating in the follow me memes would get me some viewers...  but what I didn't expect was that after I stopped entering those memes, I gained more followers on this blog than on my original blog!  I have been so overwhelmed and blessed by the love and support from you, my readers.  I would like to offer both of these awards to the following blogs who really support me day in and day out.  Thank you ladies for your kind words and encouragement to keep keepin' on. {There are several more of you but I don't know your blog sites... or perhaps you don't have one.  Either way, you are awesome too!}

Eat Chocolate Naked Week Has Begun!

Y'all! I am so excited about this week! Kimberly Riggins is hosting her Eat Chocolate Naked Week. Now, a lot of the women participating are fit women with just some minor hang ups about their bodies, but I want you to know that this is so important to women trying to lose more substantial weight as well. Today she asked some questions as an entry to win a session with her about body issues. She is a Board Certified Holistic Health and Wellness Counselor and Coach, accredited with the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP). She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Masters of Science in Holistic Nutrition and several certifications as a Personal Trainer. She knows what she's talkin' about and I really urge you to take advantage of her free advice on her blog. It's very eye opening at times and always encouraging.

I started answering her questions thinking, oh this isn't hard... and then it got personal. My answers got emotional. I wanted to share with you what I wrote to her so that you can be encouraged and maybe feel like you aren't alone in case you have the same struggles.

Eating a Rainbow

Red fruits and vegetables are colored by natural plant pigments called "lycopene" or "anthocyanins." Lycopene in tomatoes, watermelon and pink grapefruit, for example, may help reduce risk of several types of cancer, especially prostate cancer. Anthocyanins in strawberries, raspberries, red grapes and other fruits and vegetables act as powerful antioxidants that protect cells from damage.  Red fruits and veggies also help lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol.

Orange/yellow fruits and vegetables are usually colored by natural plant pigments called "carotenoids." They also contain zeaxanthin, flavonoids, lycopene, potassium, and vitamin C. Beta-carotene in sweet potatoes, pumpkins and carrots is converted to vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy mucous membranes and healthy eyes. Scientists have also reported that carotenoid-rich foods can help reduce risk of cancer, heart disease and can improve immune system function. Citrus fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C and folate, a B vitamin that helps reduce risk of birth defects.

Green fruits and vegetables contain chlorophyll, fiber, lutein, zeaxanthin, calcium, folate, vitamin C, calcium, and Beta-carotene. The nutrients found in these vegetables normalize digestion time and boost immune system activity.

Blue/purple fruits and vegetables are colored by natural plant pigments called "anthocyanins." Anthocyanins in blueberries, grapes and raisins act as powerful antioxidants that protect cells from damage. They may help reduce risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease. Other studies have shown that eating more blueberries is linked with improved memory function and healthy aging. These nutrients improve calcium and other mineral absorption, fight inflammation, reduce tumor growth, act as an anticarcinogens in the digestive tract, and limit the activity of cancer cells.

White fruits and vegetables are colored by pigments called "anthoxanthins." They contain nutrients such as beta-glucans, EGCG, SDG, and lignans that provide powerful immune boosting activity. These nutrients also activate natural killer B and T cells, reduce the risk of colon, breast, and prostate cancers, and balance hormone levels, reducing the risk of hormone-related cancers.

You can go here to see which rainbow foods I'll be munching on during the day.

If you are new here, Welcome!  I am Jeannette.

Here at A Hippo With A Headband you will find a chronicle of my journey to a healthier me.  At my heaviest, while pregnant I was 270lbs and suffered from gestational diabetes and preeclampsia.  I had been losing weight slowly before I became pregnant, but now I know what lays ahead of me if I don't step up my game!  I am seeking to be healthy for myself, my husband, and our children {we plan to have a couple more one day :0P}.

Under my header you can see my weekly weight loss progress.  If you look at my sidebar, you can find my inspirations and a scrolling marque of my weight loss in photos.  In the footer is a chart showing my progress overtime {running data from the ticker above}.

Here are some posts to get you started:

If you are an old friend, welcome back love!  I am so glad to see you again.  Are you ready to jazzersize?  Or you know... whatever.  Just get movin'!  Maybe zumba, yoga, carry a 19lb baby around?  Anything to get that blood pumpin' and your body sweatin'!

Now put on those headbands and let's get started!

Hot 100 Update Week 4

Here are my goals for a quick reminder:
  • Lose 15 lbs
  • List 15 items in my new Etsy shop
  • Completely clean and decorate the Living room, Kitchen, Craft room and Nursery
How did I do last week?
  • I lost another .8lbs. - Headed in the Right Direction
  • Still on track.  4/15 items listed, 1 sold, custom order in the works.  I also sold something on Ebay that I've been trying to sell for a while.  Now I just need to sell my old engagement ring/wedding set. - Check
  • I got started on the nursery last week.  Just a few more things to finish and I'll have one room down.  - In Progress
Hmmm, nothing has really changed this week huh?  Oh well, I'm still heading in the right direction so that's always good.

How did you do with your goals this week?

An All New Diet

Well, I am almost back to normal.  I am still only able to eat applesauce and crackers, but I'm not getting sick anymore.  I think in a couple days I'll be able to eat anything I want again.  Which brings an interesting thought to mind...

There is literally nothing in my system right now.  Thank you virus for the system flush...  It wasn't pleasant, but it is what it is.  Now the question is, what will I put back in it?

Like I said, I have not bought any cheese this month.  In fact, the only dairy in the house is milk and vanilla yogurt.  I think I will concentrate on the chicken and fish in the freezer for meals.  We have some 90% lean meat as well but I think that's going to be too harsh for me for at least a week.  Plus, with the cost of meat it's more something we eat on occasion and not several times a week.  Let's see, what should I be eating?
  • Whole grains - whole grain homemade bread, brown rice
  • Veggies - green beans, corn, spinach, carrots, broccoli
  • Fruits - tomatoes, pears, peaches, apples
  • Lean meats/Proteins - chicken, fish, soybutter, beans, eggs
  • Low fat dairy - milk, yogurt, cottage cheese
Looks pretty good to me.  Any suggestions?

My Dear Friends

Please keep LB, DH and I in your thoughts this week.  If you are one who prays, please do as well.  We made a trip to the ER last night after I passed out in the bathroom and LB had it coming both ways.  Turns out, we both have the stomach flu.  Right now we are both sipping liquids.  I hope by dinner time he can have a bottle and I some crackers.  Depending on how severe it is (I am hoping what happened last night was the end of the severity) I may or may not be online this week.  I love you all; you are all so dear and sweet.  I'll be back soon I hope.

UPDATE for Wed:  Thank you all for your well wishes.  I am doing a little better.  I've had about 8 crackers, 24 oz of water, 2 oz of gatorade, 1 cup of chicken broth and 3 spoons of applesauce in the last 48 hours.  Needless to say I am weak and tired.  Unfortunately (thought I'd never say this...) LB is all better.  I say unfortunately because he is ready to eat, nap and play like normal and all I can do is muster enough strength to make him a bottle and put him in his play area when he's done eating.  It's been rough, but DH is home now and I can focus on resting.  On a plus side, I have gotten two homework assignments done.  I have no idea if they make any sense because you can imagine my brain isn't too sharp right now, but they are done none the less.  I have four more to do and I'll be all caught up. I had done them incorrectly, but thankfully my professor is allowing me to correct them with a penalty for being late.  Another, kinda plus, is that I have lost 6lbs.  Kinda because a loss is a loss, but let me tell ya... this is NOT how you want to lose weight.  I just hope I don't put 8lbs back on after all this is over.  I can literally feel my body starving and it sucks!  Here's hoping y'all are well this flu and virus season.

Advice for Successful Weight Loss

I found these ideas, originally printed from Prevention magazine readers, and posted by Lauren.  I have picked and chosen the ones most pertinent to me to serve as a reminder for myself here on the blog.  There are over 50 of them in all, so you should go check out the link above and read them all in your spare time.

Ditch all-or-nothing thinking. Every time that Sandra Wadsworth, 41, attempted weight loss, she'd quit at the first slipup. "But I finally lost 20 pounds when Weight Watchers helped me see that I wasn't a bad person. Everyone makes mistakes. The key is to learn from them." {I have a big problem with this one.}

Seize your strength. "I stopped telling myself that I was destined to be overweight forever," says Adrienne Sussman, 52. "I accepted that whatever was broken, I had the power to fix." To get comfortable with yourself, stand in front of a mirror completely naked every couple of weeks. Find one body part that you like--even if it's your elbows! When Adrienne stopped berating herself, she shed 30 pounds.  {Okay, God is really laying this on me thick!  I have read it in four posts today alone... I love my feet! And my legs looked HOT in that skirt!}

Make a dream book. "Before I could change my body, I had to change my thinking," recalls Sonia Turner, 43. "To build my confidence, I created a scrapbook of people exercising and overcoming adversity. I included a photo of my husband's company Christmas party. I'd always stayed home because I was embarrassed, but I announced, 'Next year, we're going.'" When the holidays rolled around, Sonia had lost 135 pounds. She and her husband danced the night away.   {My psychologist says DH and I should do this for who we want to become.  I can make one for my attitude and my body as well.}

Loving Ourselves As We Are

The following article was written by Jillian Michaels, Wellness Expert.  Most of you know who she is from The Biggest Loser, but if not you can scroll to the bottom of this post and check out her webpage.

In her article she talks about how people, women especially, not only conform to the outrageous standards put on beauty by society as a whole, but that we embrace it as our own standard.  We've all been there.  No matter what size jeans you wear or the shade of your skin or hair, we've all looked in the mirror and said hateful things about our bodies, our minds, and our very souls.  I've been guilty of calling myself fat, lazy, and angry lately.  Jillian would have us stop right there in mid-sentence and pay ourselves a compliment instead.  I've read this same advice over and over lately but I always end up thinking... but those things are true.

Where I Stand Today

A good friend of mine, Dawn, suggested a little friendly compeititon to lose weight that she is entered in.  And I have decided it just might be what I need so I have asked her to enter my name for consideration.  I'll keep y'all up to date on that as I hear back about it.  Right now I wanted to touch base with you and tell you where I stand right now.  Several things have changed and/or are changing soon:

{Summary at the bottom of the post since I kinda rambled a bit lol}
Fortunately... we were broke for about 2 days (payday is tomorrow) because DH gifted me with my first trip to the circus a couple weeks back.  I say fortunately because we also happened to run out of EVERYTHING this week... and I mean everything.  We even need more kitchen trash bags and puppy pads lol.  The thing is, we now have an almost empty kitchen.  I can start fresh.

Two Steps Forward, Three Steps Back

I feel like I am two steps forward, three steps back with my weight loss.  Have you ever been there?  If you're still reading this blog after a couple of posts... I'm pretty sure you have.  I lost 35lbs of water weight and baby fat after having my son last December.  THEN I lost another 20lbs just before and after I had my gallbladder removed in June because I had to cut out all fats.  I was so happy that I was UNDER my pre-pregnancy weight at only 7 months postpartum because I had gained 50lbs with my son and the preeclampsia.  But, as soon as I went back to a normal diet (mostly adding cheese back into my diet) I jumped back up to 225.  I almost hit 230 a couple weeks ago and FREAKED OUT!  I had almost undone all that weight I had lost.

Eat Chocolate Naked Week 2010

I'm Eating Chocolate Naked because I deserve it and I'm beautiful!  Are you?

Eating chocolate naked is the brain child of Kimberly Riggins.  The point of eating chocolate naked is to indulge in things that make us happy while accepting who we are and our own unique bodies.  Kimberly's blog posts are to the point, inspiring, enlightening, and funny.  She even offers some yummy recipes and wine advice.  I really enjoy reading what she offers and I wanted to share it with y'all.  When I got an e-mail today about this celebration week I just knew I had to share... then I saw her icon and that sealed the deal!  I think it is sexy (and I made a button of it so you can post it on your blog if you want)!  I hope you'll join me.

Motivation in Motion - My Etsy Shop

I DID IT!!! I listed something in my shop!  I am so excited!!!  There is a widget toward the bottom of my blog for you to check out all my items.  There is only one right now.  I have about 4 more things to post but it's good to do them one a day at first so my name is at the top of the search function on etsy.  I'd love if you would heart my shop and tell your friends about it.  I need some friends on etsy lol.

In my shop now...

Coming soon...
Vintage hat, Vintage 1950's military letters to a loved one,  Pink shabby chic pumpkin fall decor!

I also listed a couple things on Craigslist that I have been needing to list but for some reason hadn't.  I am feeling quite motivated right now.  I think I might tackle my closet tonight!  Time to sort all my unpacked clothes into keep and donate piles!  Wish me luck.

Motivation in Motion - Body on the Move

The last week I went for a walk.... a 1.4 mile walk!  Last time I took this walk down to the end of our main street and back I was carrying LB in an infant backpack and barely made it half way before thinking of turning back.  I toughed it out though, made it all the way to the stop sign (.7 mile) and turned back toward home.  It was hard and downright painful.  My whole body ached and my arms were numb from the 20lb baby in his backpack.

This time I asked DH to leave the stroller behind for LB and I to use.  I put LB in a warm outfit, covered him in a blanket, and headed out.  It was pretty windy, but the chilly breeze felt nice.  Next time I'll be putting LB in his snow suit and putting a throw blanket over the stroller so he is covered from the wind.  And I'll be wearing ear muffs because my poor little ears were burning by the time I got home.  {I think I have an ear infection actually...They've been hurting for a few weeks now.}

I learned a few things about my latest walk with the stroller:

Hot 100 Update Week 1

Here are my goals for a quick reminder:

  • Lose 15 lbs
  • List 15 items in my new Etsy shop
  • Completely clean and decorate the Living room, Kitchen, Craft room and Nursery
How did I do last week?
  • I lost 0.9lbs.  I'd say that's close enough!  1lb lost - Check
  • I have not listed anything in the Etsy shop yet... BUT I do have 4 crafts and 1 vintage item ready to post!  I need to get some nice photos of them and then get them uploaded. - Dash? In Progress
  • I did not get anything completely cleaned and decorate this week... however, I have decided my first room to tackle will be the living room.  I did do a cleaning overhaul for the house last Saturday before our guests arrived so I am in a good position to de-clutter and decorate next week. - In Progress

Friday Fun!

It's time for Friday Fun!  That means it's time for Friday Party Hop! I hope you'll join me this week for some blog, twitter, and facebook hopping fun!

There are only a couple rules for this party.  You don't even have to follow me unless you want to.  I'd rather have a few active readers because they enjoy my blog than have you feel obligated to follow me.  It isn't a rule... but I would love if you grabbed my button so others could find us and link up.

The Rules:
1)  Link up your blog, twitter, or facebook... all social networks are welcome here in fact
{Non-bloggers may need to upload photos from their computer or other site}
2) Hop around and follow whomever you want.  No pressure to follow here.
3) Have fun meeting new people!

Won't You Join Me?
I host a weekly meme called Motivation Monday.  You can link up anything you need motivation and encouragement to finish:  getting healthy, a craft project, your homework! lol
